September 4, 2013 at sundown, Jews around the world entered into the High Holy days kicked off by the new year, Rosh HaShanah. The first month of the Hebrew calendar is Tishrei. This year, it's 5774. From Rosh HaShanah, Jews go through the Days of Awe to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement and the holiest of holy days. Yom Kippur begins at sundown on 9 Tishrei or September 13 in 2013. The last month of Elul (on the Hebrew calendar) is spent in preparation for this holy season. Here's information on the Jewish Days of Awe to use in classroom lesson plans or homeschool. Regardless of creed, kids should be taught about world religious observances, cultural festivals and holidays.
